The Eye Of Vichy (VHS)

This remarkable documentary, from acclaimed director Claude Chabrol, shows us Vichy France as it viewed itself--through its newsreels, advertisements, and feature films. Born in the ashes of defeat in 1940, Marshall Petain's Vichy regime quickly accommodated itself to German rule, even as its leaders proclaimed their own National Revolution in politics and values. The results of these tangled agendas are vividly presented here, as Vichy's newsreel footage reveals a France in which pro-Nazi sympathies and French nationalism proved surprisingly compatible.

France, 1993, B&W, 110 minutes, English commentary and English subtitles.
