Luis Trenker Mountain Films Born in the Tyrol, Luis Trenker began his film career in 1924, portraying rugged, daring outdoorsmen. In the '30s he wrote, directed, and starred in a series of films glorifying epic struggles-such as colonization and wars for freedom-set against spectacular, usually-mountainous landscapes. Because his 1940 film Der Feuerteufel displeased Propaganda Minister Goebbels, Trenker was thereafter barred from directing and allowed to act only in films by second-rate directors. Many have praised the visual expressiveness of Trenker's films.
