Werner Holt and Gilbert Wolzow are among them. Gilbert is a fanatical soldier. At the front Werner begins to realize the senselessness of war and leaves his friend. But when Gilbert is hanged by the SS, Werner turns his gun on his own army. This film, based on Dieter Noll's novel of the same title, is a politically and artistically important piece of its time. Its new, surprising frankness about the toll war takes on youth immediately generated much public resonance.
