The Forgotten Battle Of Fort Pillow And The Birth Of The KKKUsing re-enactments, historical footage, photos, and contemporary interviews, this documentary explores and clarifies some of the critical issues of the Civil War. In 1864, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his Rebel forces killed surrendering or retreating African-American Union soldiers at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, triggering a congressional investigation. After the war, Forrest became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, a fraternal organization formed to protect Southerners' rights during Reconstruction. Having ordered the Klan disbanded in reaction to its barbaric acts against African Americans, in the latter part of his life Forrest publicly supported African-American advancement.
