Skenduolis (The Drowned Man) The Drowned Man is the delightful, short comedy that was director Zalakevicius's film thesis and won him immediate attention from Moscow. It features the exploits of a would-be writer who accidentally becomes the town hero. When he purposefully tries to repeat the good deed, however, it farcically blows up in his face. This early work by the now-famous Zalakevicius is not to be missed for its ironic humor and wonderful depiction of Lithuanians at play during the independent pre-World War II era. Featuring popular Lithuanian music of the 30s, the film also includes some veiled criticism of that bourgeois period by showing how individuals were at the mercy of fate and felt they had to be opportunistic. Actor A.Masiulis is marvelous as the unlikely hero who has no control over either his rise to fame or his demise. Lithuania, 1955, directed by V.Zalakevicius and S.Berelovicius, B/W, 11 minutes, sound, Lithuanian dialogue, no subtitles.
